After using the SharePoint Migration Manager on the default port (8085) I found that we were not close to saturating the network. The first item I tried was to increase the number of Sites I copied at the same time. You can copy 6 Sites on a quad processor DL380 with 8gb of RAM. However, I found that even with 6 sessions we were still not nearing saturation of the Network or loading the SQL Server 16 Processor with 32 GB of RAM. I then ensured we didn't have Windows Firewall and ICS was disabled and next I changed the default ports to (1700). I am not sure why this increased the speed at which we were able to copy sites but on this clients network it was much faster….
