Another issue we ran into with a client who had purchased the Bamboo Solutions Bulk List Importer is when importing documents to a library where the Site Columns matched existing metadata properties (Title, Author, Subject Summary, etc) the properties were promoted from the document (default behavior) instead of being inserted from the Excel Spreadsheet. This occurred whether the document was protected, unprotected, locked, read, write, and read only. Also, when using the ORHD (Office Remove Hidden Data) tool from Microsoft. OHRD only removes metadata properties from unlocked documents and leaves them as read only . When uploading the documents that had been cleaned with ORHD Bamboo Solutions Bulk List Importer would leave all Values blank when importing using the excel spreadsheet. The worst part is the level of skill and escalation mechanism with the Bamboo Solutions help desk, they didn't understand the concepts of property promotion / demotion in SharePoint and after a couple of emails stopped responding to our email regarding a resolution to this issue.
The resolution was to write a OneClick App (Office Stripper) with VS05 and VSTO that allows you to choose to Add, Modify, Remove Any Standard properties or Remove All Properties whether the document is locked, unlocked, read only, protected, unprotected and leave the document in a read/write state or the original state (read/write was Necessary with using Bamboo). I will be making this App available soon to meet our ISV obligations with Microsoft.
In Addition, I met with the folks @ Bamboo Solutions during the SharePoint Conference and they promised the issue with the help desk escalation would be handled, documentation would be modified, FAQs updated (I havent chjecked if this is the case) and were totally cool. Hey it's still a good tool for the price but for smaller migrations, you will spend more cycles getting it to work than just using my favorite migration tools from metalogix for NTFS and SharePoint migrations and Tzunami when you need to migrate data from Documentum, Notes or Plumtree, they have many more but these are the only ones I have used..
